MALTHOREN

Being remembered is a form of existence.

Blood of the Veilorim

Descend

The First Law

In Malthoren, memory is not a comfort.
It is a force.

Names matter. Witnesses matter. Oaths matter. The dead matter.

An old god built a Veil between this world and the place where gods sleep, and he made it out of memory itself. What is remembered endures on both sides of it. What is forgotten falls out of existence entirely — even to the gods.

So a quiet war runs beneath every kingdom. One power anchors what was promised and witnessed. Another unmakes it, erasing names, histories, and whole lives as if they had never been.

To be forgotten here is not to fade from a conversation. It is to die a second time. Some creatures take your life. Others take your name.

Begin where the world still remembers.

Blood of the Veilorim — Chapter One

I · The Vanishing Vow

A father's daughter is dying of a fever no healer will treat. In the worst quarter of Orvadren, an old herbalist tells him the truth: no medicine can save her, but something asleep in his own blood can — and its price is not paid in coin. He saves her. By morning, no one alive remembers that he ever existed.

II · Mourned While Living

A red-haired girl watches a neighbour's house die in a flash of impossible fire — and wakes to a world that has quietly erased her. Her own mother grieves a daughter buried a year ago. With no one left who knows her name, Maela rides north toward the only people who might still remember her: her grandparents, beyond a forest no one is meant to cross.

III · The Hungering Wood

The Borderwood does not let travellers leave. When its roots close on Maela, something she cannot name answers in fire — and draws out the one thing in the wood that is not a beast: an elf who keeps the memory of fallen kingdoms. He agrees to walk her out. But something older has woken in the trees, and it is not finished with them.

IV · The Unspoken Power

Past the Kaltherîn border lies the Widow's Defile, where soldiers travel only in sixes and still do not all return. Halfway through, four hooded riders close on Maela and the elf — Válkherîn, who drink memory with blood and are almost impossible to kill. Cornered against the rock, the power she has carried unspoken since birth finally breaks loose.

V · The Crow's Whisper

In a city built to make people unforgettable, Maela meets a woman who wears a different face each year — and warns her that when she wakes the second time, she must not wait for the third. That night the Válkherîn find the inn, and Maela learns what her warning truly meant. She and Thaelir flee toward a sworn arch no Válkherîn crosses easily, chased by a stillness worse than any pursuit.

VI · The Drowned Singers

Fleeing through a tunnel that bends distance itself, Maela and Thaelir surface at an impossible river — where their guide Seyrha sheds her human shape and reveals she is Veilorim, older than the first monolith. But the road runs beside the lake of Nârêth, and voices wearing the faces of Maela's dead parents call to her from the black water. She walks in before Thaelir can stop her — and the drowned things below learn, too late, that what she carries was never theirs to take.

VII · The Sunken Crown

Fragments from the Archive

The chapters only pass through the world.

These are the records left in the margins.

The Veilorim Codex

There are those the world cannot hold on to. Magic settles on them like a sentence, and one by one the people who loved them forget their faces — the portrait empties, the widow swears she has mourned for years. And whatever such a one works, the world takes back from elsewhere: force the flame, and something in the blood goes cold; force a memory, and your own name comes loose. — On the price of the gift

The War No One Names

Every promise spoken aloud is a bridge — rooted in the moment it was sworn and in the moment it must be kept. While that bridge stands, there is something in the world the eraser cannot touch. This is why the oldest enemy hunts not monuments, but the people who keep their vows. — Marginalia, author unknown

The Bestiary · sealed entry

In the rotting woods, the roots move only after you have passed. By the time you feel them at your throat, the forest has already decided that you will not leave. — Field record of the Wandering Handroot Full record sealed · restored in the Archive

The Bestiary

Not every creature is merely a beast.

Some take your life. Others take your name. The Archive keeps what records survived — and most remain sealed.
